Episcopal Relief and Development is providing assistance to families on after Cyclone Catherine hit Brazil. The northern part of Rio Grande do Sul and the southern region of Santa Catarina were battered by high winds and heavy rains. Winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour uprooted trees and caused at least one landslide. The cyclone killed 13 people, damaged and destroyed homes, and left thousands of families homeless.
"This phenomenon occurred for the first time in the history of our country," said Christina Winnischofer, General Secretary of the Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil. "The affected region [comprises] 40 towns," she said.
On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development is assisting the Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil with emergency funds for building materials. The materials will be used for temporary shelters and to repair damaged houses.
