ERD assists families after floods and mudslides in Colombia

2/18/2005
[Episcopal Relief and Development]  Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is assisting people left homeless in northeastern Colombia after deadly flooding and mudslides over the last week. At least 55 people have died, 40 remain missing, and 30,000 have been forced from their homes. Santander, a mountainous region north of Bogota, is the hardest hit province. A torrential, three-day rainstorm that started last Friday has caused river banks to burst, destroying homes, bridges, and roads.

"Many Anglican families living in the Santander cities of Bucaramanga, Piedecuesta, and Giron lost their houses along with their belongings when they were swept away by torrents of water," said Bishop Francisco Duque of Colombia.

On behalf of Episcopalians, ERD is providing emergency assistance to the Diocese of Colombia for critical aid such as food and clothing.

The Rev. Jorge Martinez, vicar of several Anglican missions in Santander, said, "The people in need are victims of the rain. The river took the few belongings they had and left them with nothing."

A series of storms moving across South America has impacted several countries. Earlier this week, ERD gave emergency assistance to the Diocese of Venezuela following landslides and heavy rains which affected communities throughout the country. ERD has been in contact with Bishop Randolph George of Guyana. The diocese is assessing damage caused by severe flooding.
