ERD provides emergency assistance in Guyana after floods

3/7/2005
[Episcopal Relief and Development]  Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency assistance in Guyana after heavy rainfall and flooding displaced tens of thousands of people, killed at least six, and destroyed crops. The flooding affected nearly one-quarter of the population and hit hardest in the country's northeastern regions, including the capital city of Georgetown and surrounding areas on the Atlantic Coast.

"In January, Guyana was visited with the worst natural disaster in its history," said the Rt. Rev. Randolph Oswald George, Bishop of Guyana.

"The heavy rainfall resulted in flooding in the city and coastal villages with some places taking on the appearance of lakes. Roads, cemeteries, low-built houses, and farmlands were completely submerged," said Bishop George.

On behalf of Episcopalians, Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency relief to the Diocese of Guyana for communities affected by the flooding. The assistance will provide critical aid such as food, temporary shelter, and clean water.

"We are now faced with the threat of waterborne diseases caused by the collapse of sanitary facilities and pollution from dead animals, poultry, and rodents," said Bishop George. Newspapers in Guyana reported that waterborne diseases killed at least 22 people and a dozen others contracted dengue fever.

Several countries in South America were affected by the flooding caused by strong storms in the region. ERD supplied emergency assistance to the Dioceses of Venezuela and Colombia after heavy rains and mudslides.
