ERD Provides Emergency Aid After Mudslides in Honduras

6/24/2005
  [Episcopal Relief and Development]

Episcopal Relief and Development is assisting families affected by mudslides which happened today near Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Five families were killed and several homes were destroyed.

“Currently, there are families in high risk areas, such as Nueva Esparanza, that must be evacuated so the next rains don’t create another mudslide onto their homes,” said Abagail Nelson, ERD’s Director of Latin America Program. Nelson is currently in Honduras assessing ERD’s programs in the country. “There is also concern for the community of Villa Nueva. An emergency team in Tegucigalpa is going out to assess the damage and situation in the region,” said Nelson.

On behalf of Episcopalians, Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency relief to help with evacuation costs and temporary shelter provisions for families in affected and at-risk communities.

Please pray for people affected by this disaster. We will continue monitoring the situation and stand ready to respond and provide additional emergency assistance as needed.
