Dear Senator ______________,
The Episcopal Church has lent strong support to interfaith efforts to bring about a just and fair immigration system. We are encouraged that Americans throughout the country are embracing an immigration system which is just and humane. I trust that in the days ahead, you will join colleagues in the Senate in pressing for true comprehensive immigration reform.
I write seeking your support for legislation which makes it possible for a substantial increase in the number of workers who can enter the U.S. to work and eventually move toward permanent residence and citizenship. Also, as a provision of proposed immigration legislation, I urge the adoption of a system whereby those now in the U.S. without status can earn credit toward permanent residence and eventual citizenship if certain requirements are met. Additionally, of special concern to persons of faith has been a House approved measure which would penalize those religious and humanitarian workers who assist undocumented persons. We strongly oppose such a measure and hope that language drafted by the Senate Judiciary Committee will be a feature of the immigration bill that finally emerges.
America has been the beneficiary of the rich contributions of immigrants since our inception as a nation. I believe that we must uphold this tradition of being a welcoming nation. It is also an imperative of our faith that we extend hospitality to the stranger and respect the gifts which they offer. I recognize the security concerns that must be given heightened attention during this critical time in our history. However, our historic tradition of offering rescue and hope to the oppressed and receiving with gratitude the contributions of the newcomer should not be abandoned.
Thank you for considering my request
Faithfully,
