In 2008, women representing 16 tribes reaffirmed the work of the Anglican Council of Indigenous Women at the Indigenous Women's Gathering in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Episcopal Church's Advocacy Center. They agreed to organize to unite the voices of Native American and Indigenous women under the name of Anglican Council of Indigenous Women, a network first organized in 1993. The Anglican Council of Indigenous Women focuses on advocating for the inclusion of Native American and Indigenous peoples and their communities within the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion to: promote racial justice and equality for and among the diverse communities of Indigenous peoples; defend children's rights and work towards the eradication of poverty and domestic violence; ignite grassroots movements through culturally reflective education and training; develop, distribute and promote culturally appropriate resources; and ensure these resources are available in our communities and reservations.
