Pocahontas
She was known by many names – Matoaka and Amonute, formally, and Rebecca Rolf, when she moved to England – but is best known by her nickname, Pocahontas. The daughter of Chief Powhatan, befriended Captain John Smith and, according to legend, may have saved his life. She later married an English settler named John Rolfe in the Jamestown church and was baptized a Christian. Near the Jamestown church location where Pocahontas and Rolfe were married, someone placed a wild buttercup in the hand of her bronze statue. – Left photo by Sarah Bartenstein, Director of Communications, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, VA |
