Violent tornadoes tore across the South on Tuesday, leaving over 50 people dead in parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. This is the highest death toll caused by tornadoes in a 24-hour period since 1999.
Tuesday’s storms spawned a cluster of killer tornadoes, along with hail and heavy snow that injured at least 100 people across the five states and reduced homes, schools and businesses to rubble. Stunned residents report unimaginable devastation in their communities.
Episcopal Relief and Development has contacted several of the affected dioceses and is reaching out to others. Assessments are underway to determine critical needs. Episcopal Relief and Development stands ready to respond, and offers prayers of support to all who are suffering as a result of the tornadoes.
